Iwan Fuls Language Wolf story page 48

The white, caliginous sky slowly started to turn grey. It was dusk in the forest and there was a freezing wind in the air. Chloe had to find an open clearance to set up her tent. Chloe is a very adventurous researcher that has a deep passion for wolves. Ever since she was a young girl she adored wolves and wanted to study them. And now she can finally fulfil her dream. Luckily, there was a small hill that can keep Chloe safe from any snakes or strange beasts. She set up her tent and went to bed. The next morning, very early, Chloe packed up her tent, ate breakfast, and started searching for the wolves.

Even in the summer the Black Forest is superbly cold in the mornings. The wind is like a ghost breathing on your neck. As Chloe strolled through the dense forest, she heard the sharp howl of a wolf. Her heart started to beat faster and faster as excitement filled her. She started to jog-sprint to where the sound was coming from. While running, she tripped and slipped a few times, but she didn’t stop. She was determined to find those wolves. Panting, Chloe quickly paused to listen where the wolves were, but she heard nothing. The only sound she heard was the lonely sound of silence. Disappointed by this; Chloe walked back to the camp in dismay.

Many days past and there was no sign of any wolf. One day, while Chloe was eating lunch, she heard strange noises. It sounded like wild animals devouring their prey. Chloe immediately dropped her plate and went to investigate these strange noises. She stood in agape when she saw what it was. The ferocious, gold-yellow eyes looked straight into Chloe’s. Foam started to build up in its mouth as it growled. Its coarse fur stood up straight, showing its anger. For a split-second Chloe wanted to faint, but there was no time for that: she had to run. Just as she turned around she noticed that the rest of the pack surrounded her. In that instant she remembered what her grandfather taught her. She ran as fast as her legs could carry her to the nearest climbable tree. Fortunately, there was one nearby. Chloe climbed to the very top of the tree. After a few hours the wolves gave up and left.

Chloe’s will was starting to fall. It has been four months and the wolves kept running away or charging. On the fifth month, Chloe was devastated that she couldn’t study the wolves so she gave up. She slowly packed up her tent and started to walk back to one of the nearest villages. As she walked, she reached a very steep downhill. Carefully, she walked down the hill until suddenly she stepped on a loose stone. Chloe slipped and began to roll. She rolled and rolled until she hit the bottom. There she lay – unconscious. Her last words that she muttered were: “I could have screamed, but I didn’t. I could have fought, but I didn’t. I just lay there and let it happen, watching the winter-white sky go grey above me.
